Use of MTBF

Make sure the MTBF is calculated correctly, before it can be used for further analysis.

Two very practical uses of MTBF:

  1. Estimate/predict the number of failures (i.e. amount of corrective work) in any point of time
in future – the larger the projected time window the higher the accuracy of failure
    predictions).
  2. By narrowing down the MTBF analysis from the perspective of equipment class –>
equipment type –> equipment component(s), one can get a really good picture of where the
majority of failures comes from <– track failures of equipment components in work orders.
